Texans Grieve While Politicians Do Nothing

(TX) – Texans suffered another mass shooting today. This time at an elementary school. This latest shooting was at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Eighteen children and three adults were killed. There are still people in the hospital so those numbers may rise.

18-year old Salvador Ramos went on a killing spree during the last week of the school year. He was armed with a handgun and some type of long gun. The information on the long gun has not been released yet. Details are still shaky, but it appears Ramos may have killed his grandmother before heading to the school. Salvador Ramos was killed by police. The motive for the shooting is unknown, but Ramos was a previous student of Robb Elementary School.

Texans Support Gun Control Measures

It may seem like Texas wants to be the wild west, but the reality is Texans support gun control measures. The reason we’re in this current position is due to politicians trying to instigate fear and division to get elected. Giffords.org published an article on May 24, 2021, on a poll they conducted.

An overwhelming 79% of Texas voters, 71% including gun owners and 85% persuadable voters, support the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, also known as H.R. 8, that requires background checks on all gun sales and transfers of firearms.

Giffords is a “gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.” However, they are just reporting the findings. The poll was conducted by Global Strategy Group. And the results align with other polls. A 2020 article by the Texas Tribune shows 79% of Texans are in favor of requiring background checks on ALL gun sales. 15% are opposed and 6% don’t know.

Abbott Ignores Police Arguments Against Permitless Carry

Greg Abbott constantly claims to support law enforcement. When he was considering allowing permitless carry, multiple police agencies and organizations spoke out against it.

Mike Mata, the president of the Dallas Police Association, from KXAN.com,

“Every police officer in Texas supports the right of our citizens to arm themselves for sport, hunting and protection,” he said. “But as with any Constitutional right there comes great responsibility. For the safety of Texas residents, we want to make sure everyone who carries a firearm is well trained, follow basic gun safety measures and understand the importance of responsible gun usage.”

Their pleas and arguments against permitless carry were ignored by those controlling our Texas government. Instead, politicians chose to play to the most extreme members of their base and allowed permitless carry.

The Innocent Pay the Price

All mass shootings are horrific, but it’s even more so when you think of hot metal objects slamming into small bodies, leaving them torn apart and broken. This is what the ruling party in Texas is allowing to happen. Texans want common sense gun laws. No one is going to take my gun away and they’re not going to take yours.

The acceptance by those politicians is unbelievable. It’s almost as if they feel those little kids gave their lives to protect the sacred second amendment. Well, they didn’t give their lives. Those lives were taken. You would think a party that constantly claims to be prolife would have a problem with this. Those children deserved to be protected. Instead, they got politicians who are so afraid of the extremists in their party that they are willing to trade the lives of children to stay in power. Not very prolife.
